Simone’s Lullaby and Misha’s Bear Dance are named for Riley’s twin grandchildren, Misha and Simone, born in 1994. “Simone’s Lullaby was intended to be looped and played all during the night for the sleeping twins,” he explains. “At the last measure it says ‘Repeat until sleeping’ and it was my intention that some pianists take this seriously and perform it live until the audience all fall asleep.” With its irregular meters and left hand octaves against angular right hand chords, Misha’s Bear Dance has echoes of the final Precipitato movement of Prokofiev’s Seventh Sonata.

Absolutely love this recording. I listen to it at work. I listen to it in the car on the way home from work. I listen to it while falling asleep. Curtis’ cello is so amazing. Just got the vinyl in the mail from Discogs the other day! Can’t wait to play on my hi-fi system! Dave Sewall
